Nicole Janssen entered her second season as assistant coach under Head Coach Steve Swazo. Janssen was not a stranger to the Lady Trojans softball program as she was a stand-out player in 2006-07. While at Trinidad State, Janssen pitched her freshman year and played outfield and also received Region IX First-Team honors as a utility player. As a sophomore she played 1st base and outfield and was selected Region IX Second-Team as an infielder. Janssen still holds many records for the Trojans such as 76 hits for her career, and 55 runs in her career. “I am very excited that Nicole has come aboard and be part of our coaching staff,” TSJC Coach Steve Swazo said. “She has great knowledge of the game and will work well with our pitching staff and our outfielders. I believe Nicole will be a great addition to our softball program and will only make our program even better.”

After receiving her Associates of Arts degree from Trinidad State Junior College, Janssen spent one year playing softball at Northern State University, a Div. II school in South Dakota. After leaving there she walked-on at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley and played for one fall semester before deciding to concentrate on her academics. After her time spent playing college ball, Janssen began her career in coaching by assistant coaching Frederick High School, the same school she graduated from, where Janssen still holds the schools batting average record at .547. Janssen received All-Conference honors her junior and senior year, and received All-State 1st team honors from the Rocky Mountain news. Prior to coaching at Trinidad State Junior College, Janssen was the Head J.V Coach for Longmont High School and coaching a competitive summer traveling softball team around the state.

Kaitlyn Saunders – Class of 2014 – Catching
I have been playing softball since I was 5, with 4 years of competitive level softball. My primary position has always been behind the plate. I formerly lived in Las Vegas which has a good reputation of having top notch teams. While in Vegas, I received 2 years of professional training to be a catcher. As a freshman this year, I earned a varsity spot and received my letter as a catcher. Being a catcher, you’re often overlooked. I want to help change that by passing on my skills and knowledge to the future softball players. There is more to catching than just catching the ball. A catcher is a leader, they see the whole field and they’re the ones who control the game. Therefore, I want to help kids interested in catching to understand their importance on the field and help them become the best they can be.
